Carl FUDGE
Carl Fudge est l’un des premiers peintres à avoir incorporé dès ses débuts les processus numériques dans sa pratique picturale. Son oeuvre fait référence à la région du West Midlands en Angleterre. Pendant la révolution industrielle, cette région a subi les plus profonds bouleversements dans le pays. Les mines de charbon, les aciéries, les fonderies, ont laissé leurs traces noires sur le paysage. L’artiste Edward Wadsworth, membre fondateur du mouvement vorticiste, a fait des crassiers et des forges le sujet d’une série de gravures sur bois. Ce qui est fascinant est cette capacité qu’a Fudge de sauvegarder l’influence des gravures de Wadsworth alors même qu’il les déconstruit avec des procédés numériques. Du fait que cette série de peintures utilise une palette de couleur rouge, le public peut déchiffrer les images d’une ville en proie à des révoltes sociales et à des pollutions incontrôlées.
La déconstruction numérique que Fudge applique à ces images correspond au caractère dur des paysages et vues de villes de Wadsworth. Utilisant des logiciels comme outils qui abstractisent, Fudge convertit des images trouvées en images complexes nouvelles et met à jour la relation entre abstraction et figuration. Le fil conducteur de l’art de Fudge a toujours été une investigation sur les aspects pratiques et esthétiques de l’idée de camouflage dans l’abstraction. L’artiste a écrit que : “La dissimulation, l’histoire et même la psychologie implicite de ‘cache’ sont les sujets générateurs de mes peintures.” L’imagerie dans ses oeuvres se désintègre dans un paysage de modules mécaniques, sujet à ses propres métamorphoses. Il prolonge ou accentue l’esthétique de l’oeuvre originale avec respect et considération.
Conceptuellement et formellement sa pratique consiste à déconstruire et recomposer les couches superposées d’une iconographie en laissant des traces de leurs présences. Fudge souhaite capturer la beauté précise de l’esthétique numérique tout en continuant à célébrer la sensualité et les possibilités de la peinture. Il expose pour la première fois à la galerie à Paris des gravures sur bois en éditions limitées à côté des peintures.
