Sa découverte du travail des métaux a suivi un processus d’expérimentation des possibilités du matériau plus qu’une pure démarche conceptuelle. Thomas nous dit que : “l’acier est très malléable comme l’argile (bien qu’il admette qu’il acquiert ces propriétés seulement après avoir chauffé à plus de 1000 degrés Celsius). Après avoir soudé des plaques d’acier découpées selon des formes géométriques, il les fait chauffer dans un four, puis injecte progressivement de l’air pressurisé à l’intérieur. La sculpture se gonfle jusqu’à sa forme définitive. En dernier, il peint les sculptures avec de la peinture métallique pour automobile. Sur ces nouvelles petites oeuvres, il a utilisé pour la première fois du vernis à ongles et élargit donc sa palette de couleurs. Pour les plus grandes sculptures il réussit aujourd’hui à les gonfler à froid en injectant de l’air pressurisé très progressivement. Il a également développé une technique ingénieuse qui renverse le processus. Il dégonfle la structure métallique. Il lui est arrivé que les sculptures explosent pendant le processus ; Jeremy Thomas est un sculpteur qui innove en prenant des risques, testant en permanence la résistance et l’élasticité du matériau. L’exposition dans la galerie présente des sculptures nouvelles qui sont pour partie gonflées et pour partie dégonflées.
Jeremy Thomas, visuellement, techniquement, et, conceptuellement unifie les dualités, les paradoxes, et les oxymores ; de l’acier modelé progressivement par de l’air, un procédé créatif qui mélange un procédé totalement contrôlé et planifié par l’artiste, tel que le découpage de l’acier en formes géométriques pures, la déduction de la forme générale de la sculpture que l’artiste peut prévoir par l’expérience de sa pratique. Lorsque la sculpture se gonfle à chaud dans le four ou à l’air ambiant pour les plus grandes oeuvres, l’artiste accepte une part d’imprévisibilité surtout qui résulte du processus spontané engagé. Autres oxymores : les formes sensuelles et tridimensionnelles sont formées à partir des panneaux rigides, géométriques, et plats, un jeu entre les surfaces naturelles et rouillées et celles qui sont peintes et brillantes. En outre, le symbolisme féminin et masculin coïncide dans une même sculpture. Chaque sculpture est réalisée avec une couleur unique en harmonie avec la forme et avec la couleur de la surface rouillée.
Les visiteurs restent longtemps sur l’exposition. La vision de chaque sculpture change si radicalement d’un angle à l’autre, que c’est une vraie expérience de découverte que de tourner autour de chacune.
