Joseph NECHVATAL
Orlando and the Storm is a serie of new artificial life paintings modeled by a computer virus by Joseph Nechvatal that indirectly address the issues of gender fluidity as we pass through a viral, social and political storm. The artist imagines mythical scenes non-existent from the 1928 novel Orlando by Virginia Woolf (the story of a young aristocratic poet who transforms into a woman overnight and lives for 300 years). Storms have no sex and blow with great fluidity. In Orlando and the Storm, the artist’s ambiguous Orlando avatar moves in such chaotic and noisy environments that normal figure/ground relationships more or less merge, playing evasively with what is seen, what is suggested, what is repressed and what is desired.
Although viral issues and gender fluidity are culturally and politically relevant, these topics are not new to Nechvatal. In 2000, he exhibited works of art from the Computer Virus Project II exploring virtual hermaphroditic complexity in his exhibition ‘ec-Satyricon 2000’ and in his 2002 exhibition ‘vOluptuary: an algorithic hermaphornologv’. He has since continued to use viral and androgynous forms in his work. In 2018 he wrote an article on pan sexual art theory entitled “Before and Beyond the Bachelor Machine” which was published in Arts.
With the exception of medium-sized paintings, the other works measure 30 x 30 cm presented in unique, diptychs and triptychs. In comparison with his large paintings, the works of the new series have a greater definition with greater contrast, more saturated colors and greater brightness. They transmit the brightness of digital screens and recall church stained glass windows. His new works completely reconcile Conceptual Art with Aesthetics.
