Gints GABRANS - Photonpainting

For the second edition of Sunday’s Screenings, Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard is pleased to present a project imagined by Ms Ilze Lenkevica – interactive video screenings by the Latvian artist Gints Gabrans entitled Photonpainting. The artist creates an equilibrium between science and art with the use of light and different techniques of its projection on a wall, mirrors, photo paper, smoke or other supports. The project is proof of a fast-growing trend – that of a blurring of frontiers between art and science, and transcends the traditional video screening which consists in a series of images projected on a screen.

Photonpainting is Mr. Gabrans’ latest project in which one can experiment the amplification of the microscopic processes of the light’s electromagnetic wave interference providing an insight into the mysterious nature of light waves. It’s reminiscent of the networks of unknown but suspected universes. Using a laser beam that is refracted on a drop of water, the beam is projected in a range of 360 degrees with a giant leap of scale. As the beam is reflected on the water surface, the white light of the beam is refracted in all the colours of the spectre. The projection is captured on a light sensitive surface – photography paper. After processing the paper with photochemistry, a unique laser-made ‘photonpainting’ is created. Every work is unique and present on its surface vestiges of photons (light quanta).

The exhibition is conceived as a site-specific installation with the idea that the works by Gints Gabrans will temporarily become part of the current exhibition – Works on Paper by sixteen artists of the gallery.

Gints Gabrans represented Latvia in the 2007 Venice Biennale and has participated in exhibitions in museums such as the Contemporary Art Center, Vilnius ; Musée Carnavalet, Paris ; Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid ; Estonian Art Museum Kumu, Tallin ; Macedonian Museum of Contemporary art, Thessaloniki ; Contemporary Art Museum Kiasma, Helsinki.

After a successful first edition of Sunday’s Screening organized by twelve art galleries of the Marais district, a second edition will take place on Sunday April 11th, 2010. The visitors will have the opportunity to view screenings of videos by renowned artists represented by these galleries: Galerie Magda Danysz, Galerie Les Filles du Calvaire, Galerie Alain Gutharc, Galerie Eva Hober, Galerie Martine et Thibault de la Châtre, GDM, Galerie de Multiples, Galerie Odile Ouizeman, Galerie Emmanuel Perrotin, Galerie Polaris et Galerie Jean-Luc & Takako Richard. Six other galleries will join us for the second edition: la B.A.N.K., Galerie Anne Barrault, Galerie Bendana Pinel Art Contemporain, Galerie Jean Roch Dard, Galerie Dix9, Galerie Eric Mircher et Galerie Schirman & De Beaucé.
