Scott ANDERSON
Scott Anderson’s work was described by the art critic David Pagel as “dystopian abstraction”:
His process begins with a snippet of memory or a vestigial image lingering in his mind. He works intuitively to excavate something new and transformative from the memory. This process leads to paintings reminiscent both of surrealist dreamscapes, American Regionalism, modernist influences and with their own unique language.
Anderson’s newest paintings are composed of figures seeming to be separated and scattered across the . As Pagel noted, “Appearances and reality are tugged apart.” The most important quality of his work is the ambiguity of his figuration. You are first confronted with uncertainty, but slowly you begin to understand the characteristic of his work. The sizes of the figures do not comply with any sense of scale within the composition, lending an interesting perspective. His process is reminscient of that of Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. The pictorial space is flattened and color is used to bring the third physcial dimension into a flat space of. The canvases reflect the cultural upheavals of our time and invite the viewer to contemplate on snippets of the modern day city and its mysterious inhabitants.
“His creative process begins with bits of memory or remnants of images that linger in his mind. It intuitively works to get something new and modified out of memory.
This process leads to paintings that have reminiscences with the dreamlike landscapes of the surrealists, American regionalism, modernist influences and with their own unique language.” *
