Carl FUDGE
Carl Fudge was one of the first painters to incorporate digital processes into his pictorial practice. His work refers to the West Midlands region of England. During the Industrial Revolution, this region underwent the most profound upheavals in the country. The coal mines, the steel mills, the smelters, have left their black traces on the landscape. The artist Edward Wadsworth, a founding member of the Vorticist movement, made the slags and forges the subject of a series of woodcuts. What is fascinating is Fudge’s ability to preserve the influence of Wadsworth’s engravings even as he deconstructs them with digital processes. Because this series of paintings uses a red colour palette, the public can decipher the images of a city plagued by social revolts and uncontrolled pollution.
The artist wrote: “The concealment, the history and even the implicit psychology of ‘cache’ are the subjects that generate my paintings.” The imagery in his works disintegrates into a landscape of mechanical modules, subject to his own metamorphoses. It extends or accentuates the aesthetics of the original work with respect and consideration.
Conceptually and formally his practice consists in deconstructing and recomposing the superimposed layers of an iconography leaving traces of their presences. Fudge wants to capture the precise beauty of digital aesthetics while continuing to celebrate the sensuality and possibilities of painting. He exhibited for the first time at the gallery in Paris woodcuts in limited editions next to the paintings.
